About seven years ago I was lucky enough to buy my first home. Being a single woman this was an accomplishment. That same week of settlement, I lost my job due to downsizing and my car officially "died".
Unfortunately when you buy a home, everyone wants to "help" you. I received more credit cards than one family should even own, however being unemployed and without a car my choices chose me.
I purchased a new car at the highest interest rate possible, that two years later I had to voluntarily turn in to the lender. I used credit cards for everything until I could re establish myself in a new job for a couple of years and go back to school.
I was an educated woman, I already had my under grad degree from an elite school. The economy in 1991 was much like that of today. The job market was packed with overeducated- under paid people.
I had credit card debt over 38,000.00. This may or may not seem like alot to people, but being a single woman trying to make good on all monthly payments was impossible! Enough was enough. I was working two jobs, with one trying to earn as much over time as possible. I slept maybe a few hours a week. My debt was killing me really.
One of the ladies at my job told me about a group called Consumer Credit Counseling Service. I was desperate and did not know any better. The gentleman that reviewed my case spoke to me like I was an ignorant piece of garbage. Questions like, "Why can't you get a better job?" "Why don't you have a husband?" "Didn't you think you would have to pay this eventually?" came from this man who was going to help me!
The one thing about having debt is what it does to you emotionally. Your feel so worthless in every sense of the word. I felt like I deserved this humiliation.
For three years I scrounged 886.00 a month to go to CCCS still working two jobs. After three years I still owed nearly same amount that I went in with, I just did not have any calls from creditors as CCCS is on their payroll so to speak!
My last month with them, I was going to be late with a payment. I knew this 3 weeks ahead of time and wanted to see if I could work something out. No, I was going to be dropped from the program, all my lenders would be notified etc. I went home that night and could not sleep.
I went on line and found my financial lifeline. I do not know exactly how I got there, but I found The Debt Solution. I emailed that night, received a call the next day from a gentleman that treated me like a family member in need.
With CCCS I cried because of the humiliation, with The Debt Solution, I cried because of the caring and the respect that I had even lost for myself that I received from the intake person at TDS. He worked so hard to get me in the program. I cannot for the life of me remember his name, he had an English accent. I told him that for the first time in nearly four years I see a chance, and he said that that is why he loves his job!
From that point on, whenever I had a question, concern or just needed reassurance the communication line was open. The web site was a great source to go to for asking questions and find the answers quickly.
The bottom line is that I joined The Debt Solution in July of 2001 and in Feb 2003 my debts have been settled. What CCCS did not do for me in three years leaving me still in high debt with low esteem, TDS took care of in minimal time with maximum results. It is amazing when you start to see results, and the pressure comes off a little what you can do for yourself.
I got that better job over a year ago because I felt worth it! I have started a savings account that yes only has 300.00 in the bank but it is with a Credit Union. I have not used a credit card since 1999 and I will never use one again, bank card only. I have joined my company's 401k and am able now that I am finished with the program to use that 400.00 that I have lived "without" in my budget to save. I just needed the chance to make the better opportunities become realities. I thank you folks for everything.
